The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) XII, together with Silway River Water Quality Management Area (SRWQMA) Governing Board opened Silway River Week 2022 through Stakeholders’ Forum on April 18, 2022 at Sun City Suites, General Santos City.

During his message, EMB XII Regional Director Omar M. Saikol commended the efforts of the communities, local government units (LGUs) and partner agencies in cleaning up the Silway River traversing the highly urbanized city of General Santos. He also added that “it is a mission impossible, but nothing is impossible if we will work together.”

Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer of General Santos City Mr. Elmer Mercado pointed out that the collaborative efforts manifested when Silway River was chosen among the top five for Recognition for Individuals/Institutions towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (RIVERs) for Life Award.

Likewise launched was the Adopt-a-Station Program as part of the government, private sector, and community partnership in developing and protecting Silway River. The interested party, may it be the private sector or the community would adopt a Water Quality Monitoring Station within Silway River together with SRWQMA through EMB XII shall initiate interventions to reduce pollution within the said river.

The forum aimed to update different stakeholders such as riverine communities, local government units, industries and academe on the status of Silway River. It is also part of the five-day Silway River Week, which commemorates the inauguration of Silway River Water Quality Management Area through DENR Administrative Order No. 2010-10 dated April 19, 2010.
