Koronadal City – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) XII, together with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), conducted a ceremonial turn-over of Recycling Equipment to the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Koronadal City and Centralized Materials Recovery Facility (CMRF) to the LGU General Santos City held at the Sanitary Landfill, Purok Pagunsan, Barangay Paraiso, Koronadal City.

With the assistance of EMB XII, these provisions were made possible through the “Demonstration of Best Available Techniques (BATs) and Best Environmental Practices (BEPS) in Open Burning Activities in Response to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)” – a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project of UNIDO.
For LGU Koronadal City, the recycling equipment received includes a set of conveyor, two (2) glass crushers, a generator set, an AVR, and a set of plastic molder. While LGU General Santos City received the full ownership of the CMRF, which was inaugurated in 2019.

During her message, Dr. Carmela Centeno, the Regional Project Manager of UNIDO Vienna, said that “They aspire to see Circular Economy to become a national flagship program in the Philippines.” She also added that they believed that the LGUs, together with their team, their vision for a sustainable operation will be made possible.

In response, Atty. Eliordo U. Ogena, Mayor of Koronadal City extended his gratitude to the UNIDO, in which the project would be a big boost in the city’s effort to mitigate the solid waste management problem and to attract investors to come to the city.

Additionally, Mr. Ferdinand Pareja, Waste Management Officer, representing City Mayor Ronnel Rivera of General Santos City, conveyed their appreciation to the UNIDO for their project’s positive influence in their Solid Waste Management.

Moreover, Engr. Vizminda Osorio, Assistant Director of EMB acknowledged the efforts of the two (2) LGU beneficiaries as they become a model in a sustainable and ecological best practice in Solid Waste Management.

The turn-over ceremony was attended also by Ms. Haidee C. Piniero, National Project Manager of UNIDO Philippines; Dr. Evelyn Laurito, Consultant from the University of Sto. Tomas; Ma. Delia Valdez, Senior Officer from EMB; Abdulkadir C. Andang, Chief of Finance and Administrative Division from EMB XII; Siegfred Flaviano, Provincial Environment Management Officer of South Cotabato; and EnP. Augustus Bretana, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Koronadal. #
