The Environmental Management Bureau XII (EMB XII) conducted a blended Orientation on Magna Carta for Women, Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Law, and the Safe Spaces Act for Women on March 25, 2022 at EMB Conference Hall, Koronadal City as part of the observance of Women’s Month.
On the topic of Magna Carta for Women, Mr. Loreto B. Condesa, Information Officer II of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) XII, highlighted the drafting of the law, its background and importance. He also added that the Magna Carta aims to abolish discrimination by recognizing, protecting, fulfilling, and promoting the rights of Filipino women, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
Mr. Condesa then discussed RA 9262 or the Act Defining Violence against Women and their Children (VAWC), as well as the Provincial Women and Children Protection Desk’s policies and activities to end VAWC.
Lastly, Atty. Keysie M. Gomez, OIC – Regional Director of CHR XII, thoroughly discussed the Safe Spaces Act for Women and how it applies to the work environment. She defined “safe spaces” as places where people feel physically and emotionally safe, and where they may freely express themselves without the fear of criticism and violence. The law guarantees that all human beings are treated with dignity and that their human rights are fully respected, ensuring that both men and women have access to quality, security, and safety not only at home, but also on the streets, in public spaces, online, at work, and in educational and training institutions.
The webinar was participated by EMB XII employees and it’s goal is to inform and engaged women as stakeholders of government programs to promote citizen-centric governance and emphazise that women can make change amidst Climate Crisis.
